Comfort Measures at Missouri Vein Care

At Missouri Vein Care, we take pride in making your experience a comfortable and positive one. We take many steps to ensure your comfort.

After treatment, patients put their stockings on, walk out the door and resume their usual activities. They can do this because treatments do not hurt. Patients have some achiness and tenderness, but it is not enough to slow them down. Patients take ibuprofen for inflammation and Tylenol for discomfort, if they need it at all. Most do not need to take Tylenol.

We provide relaxation medication (oral or IV form) for patients who request it. Most patients do not request it, but it is available to those who do. You may also request “conscious sedation” meaning you will be relaxed and comfortable during your treatment and able to carry on a conversation, tell stories or even take a nap. It’s up to you – let us know what you prefer.

During the laser treatment, a numbing solution is used for comfort. All of our procedures are accomplished with a very tiny needle. There is no visible scarring, leaving the best result possible. We also use numbing spray (Gebauer’s ethyl chloride) before injections. Another helpful option for patients is the use of numbing cream (EMLA cream) before injections treatments. Let us know if you have concerns about needles.

For surface laser treatments, we also utilize cool packs to numb up the skin.

After Treatment

After treatment, patients get up, walk out the door and resume their usual activities. They can do this because treatments do not hurt. Patients have some achiness and tenderness, but it is not enough to slow them down.

We want you to walk daily beginning the day of your procedure. You can begin light exercise the same day, but we recommend that you refrain from high-impact aerobics or resistance weight lifting for one week. Ask us if you have more questions about this.

There may be mild discomfort and achiness as the treated veins complete the process of closing off. This is a process that can take several weeks to months for all your veins to close down and completely disappear. This will vary depending on your individual vein condition. Tylenol is usually all that is needed for discomfort. After laser closure treatment, our patients will take an anti-inflammatory medicine such as Ibuprofen for several days to minimize inflammation and promote healing.

Normally you can return to work and your normal routine the very next day, for some even the same day. We know that being off work can create stress, and we will work with you to minimize missing any time off. Let us know what your job requirements are, and we will work with you to get you back to work ASAP.

Wearing medical grade stockings for a period of one week after laser procedures and for 2-3 days after sclerotherapy is very important to ensure permanent closure of the veins and promote healing. Most people do fine with compression stockings, but some are challenged by them. There are aids (stocking butlers) which help in putting stockings on, and gels and suspenders which help keep the stockings up. Ask us for recommendations if you have concerns about this.

We will monitor the status of your veins with ultrasounds after your treatments to ensure that they are closing off and healing properly.

Complimentary Vein Screening

Your Complimentary Vein Screenings consists of a review by our staff of your symptoms and concerns followed by a screening ultrasound. A vein care nurse with give you an overview of vein conditions and current therapies. You can then discuss with the doctor or nurse what can be done to improve your vein condition. Unless already complete, the staff will measure you for compression stockings, which are used after treatments to speed recovery and which most insurance companies require that you try before they approve treatments.

You should allow 30 minutes to complete the screening, but some patients have more questions and may need up to 60 minutes. During your visit, you can also discuss questions concerning payment options with our financial staff.

Physician Consultation

One of our Vein Care Board Certified physicians will review your ultrasound results, medical history, examine your vein condition, and discuss treatment options with you. A consultation visit takes approximately 60 minutes and is billable to your insurance. If you have questions for the financial staff, you may need more than 60 minutes.

Venous Duplex Ultrasound

This non-invasive diagnostic test is performed in our office by registered vascular technologists and allows examination of the deep and superficial vein circulation of the legs. This ultrasound exam takes 60 minutes and is billable to your insurance. It is required before insurance approval of vein treatments and allows the physician to complete your plan of care. Follow up ultrasounds after vein treatments take 30-60 minutes of time.

Laser Closure of Veins

This is performed in our office and the treatment takes less than an hour. You should count on about 2 hours time in the office. This is performed with local anesthetic and treatment does not require general anesthetic. Because treatments do not hurt, after treatment you will be able to resume normal activities including work, exercise and chores immediately. For some people, taking the day off from work makes sense; ask our team when you are here. Most patients do just fine without relaxation medicine, but we have this available for those who prefer to have it. If you have relaxation medicine, you will need a driver and we recommend that you take the day off from work. People usually notice improvement in their symptoms within the first week, and the success rate is over 98%. You will need to wear compression stockings during the day for one week after treatment.

More Information:

Microphlebectomy (removal of varicose veins)

Performed in the office, under local anesthesia, this non-surgical procedure allows for the removal of bulging varicose veins through small needle sites in the skin and provides a quick resolution of symptoms and unsightly veins. Micro-phlebectomy takes approximately 45-60 minutes, and you should count on about 2 hours in the office. We recommend taking the day off if you have this procedure. Because it doesn’t hurt, it allows patients to be back to normal activity the next day, including work, exercise and chores. The doctor will let you know at consultation if this is the best method to treat your veins. You will be asked to wear compression stockings during the day for a week after treatment.

Sclerotherapy (injection of veins)

This non-surgical procedure for eliminating small varicose and spider veins takes 60 minutes and is performed in the office by our team of sclerotherapy nurses and physicians. Sclerotherapy works by injecting a special solution into the problem veins causing them to close down and disappear. The nurses use magnification to identify and inject the spider veins, and may also use a special light to image and treat the problem veins under the skin not readily visible to the eye. The doctor may use the ultrasound to image other veins which need treatment.

Patients have the option of receiving numbing cream or numbing spray before the treatment, and this procedure is virtually painless. Patients can immediately resume regular activity. You will be asked to wear compression stockings during the day for 2-3 days after treatment to help close the veins off.

You can go to work immediately after treatments.

Spider Vein Treatments (surface spider vein laser treatment)

This non surgical treatment uses laser energy to close down spider veins. The effectiveness can be increased with the use of sclerotherapy, and our team will use special imaging systems (Veinlite transillumination) to identify problem veins feeding into the spider veins so they can be treated.

You can go to work immediately after treatments.
